There's plenty to report from the intervening period. In work, much of the last ten weeks or so was occupied with completing my first ecology paper. The good news? It's done. And dusted. Readying the manuscript for submission wasn't entirely without drama, but I'm really excited about what's been accomplished in the project. Here's a snippet:

That preparation time was longer than I expected, and it struck me as quite different from theoretical physics, where the focus is on banging your results on the archive as soon as you have them. That's probably more efficient in terms of getting working on new projects as soon as possible, but I think the extra work we've put into this paper makes it more readable than a typical theoretical physics paper. So, I hope that that means more people will read it! We shall see.
Of course, there are always other projects going on, and in December I took my final work trip of 2008, to Davis, CA, where I met collaborators from UC Davis and UC San Francisco. My work on that project is going to have some close links with the paper I've just submitted, but has a different flavor. 2009 will reveal all.
Enough of the science. And more of the magnificent snow. Yes, not long after I returned from sunny Davis, Oregon got dumped on. Here are some pictures from Eugene. First, The Man and The Cottage:
And here are our various wheels, snowbound:
Pretty cool, huh?
More of my Christmas and New Year next time, but in the spirit of year-end introspection let me just recall an anniversary. I noted this Summer that TBR had been running for a year. But in a way, the true beginning was back in the Wake. That was fully two years ago, and boy have things changed since then.
Happy New Year!

So TBR is in the wake of the Wake?
Congrats on getting that paper finished, dude, and Happy New Year(s)! (You can take or leave the `s', as you choose.)
Henry, your use of the word "dude" is evidence enough that too many Californians have invaded Austin. I need to stop saying it myself, or maybe tell a Californian or two to hightail it out of here.
James, your picture of the snowy bike is so damn cute, if you started a microbrewery, it could be the label for your winter brew. Or did I get that idea from Fat Tire? Happy New Year!
Stephanie - James and I have been calling each other "dude" since long before I ever met a Californian. I seem to remember that it's meant to be a joke, though if so any actual humour is long gone.
Shalom, someone is still out there:) Thanks for the photos (post some more!), happy new year!
Maybe I should sell the photo to Fat Tire? Or just start my own microbrew called Cute Dog.
And I do think there is still some humour in Henry being mistaken for a Californian.
Tanya, I do have some more photos of Logan in the snow, and then wrapped up in his blanket, afterwards. Available for a price.
