It's not all work work work

...is a phrase that sticks in my head, from this ancient NatWest commercial. Do you remember it? Anyway, while it's not all work work work, some of it is. So maybe you deserve a work update.

The first good news is that due to the power of Open Access, you can now download my PNAS paper, if you like. I explained the gist of it a while ago, before it came out officially, but now you can see it in print. Pretty exciting stuff!

The second news is that my recent trip to Swindon (you know, the one where I got all excited about wi-fi on trains, and got to drive the magic roundabout) was somewhat fruitful. The visit was to interview for a research council `Life Sciences Interface' fellowship, and I heard a few weeks ago that they are awarding it to me. Which is great---it'll give me the chance to collaborate with some good people, and work on some cool projects. And get a MacBook Air.

In other work-related news, I hear that DMR is moving to the dark side---he's becoming a biologist. Many congratulations on your conversion! It really is what all the cool kids are doing.

In other non-work-related news, South-African-dude and I recently introduced both Allison and his girlfriend to the joys of Withnail and I. Here's one of my favourite scenes.

Sometime soon I'm going to have to walk into an American cafe and demand the finest wines known to humanity. And cake.

That ad is pretty bad. I think the most annoying feature is that he never quite looks straight into the camera.

The ad's genius! First thing in ages that makes me pleased to bank with NatWest. Not sure if I actually remember it or not. The cheeky "Except the paper's more expensive!" rings a bell.
